Top 10 Games of Eurogamer Expo 2008

It has been a good week; Eurogamer Expo turned out to be a fantastic event, showcasing some of the hottest upcoming games, and I had a chance to chat with awesome guys from Kuju and Lionhead at GamesIndustry.biz Career Fair .

Being myself an agnostic creature I have not managed to buy a ‘next-gen’ system yet. However, after trying some of the games at the show, I am starting to have this ‘do want’ feeling.

Here is the list of my top 10 games of the Expo , along with some initial impressions:

10. Call of Duty: World at War

To be honest, I have not tried it. I just saw guys having fun with the game, and based on what I have seen it is a pretty solid one. I am not sure about World War II setting but would definitely download the demo to try this one.

9. GTI Club

It is a fun racing game. At first I thought it was just another racer, then tried it and spent like 30 minutes having fun. The problem is it does not have this so called wow-factor, and there were some problems with over-sensitive controls. 7/10

8. Mirror's Edge

The game looks really good, kind of fresh. There are some breathtaking moments, like when you are jumping from one roof to another to find yourself grabbing the roof’s edge in the last second, and controls feel quite solid. I really wanted it to play better but could not feel the game's flow. There is a chance it will get better over time, though. 7/10

7. Gears of War 2

Let’s say it that way: I am not a fan of First Person Shooters on consoles or games that utilise FPS’ aiming system. I have spent way too much time competitively playing Counter-Strike on PC and I cannot stand the idea of aiming using joypad’s analog sticks. It is just wrong, like fighting with game controls not with enemies on the screen. Gears of War 2 , however, manages to neutralise this feeling as shooting is just one of several game’s layers. Important one, though. Did I mention that GoW 2 looks awesome? It does, and is as badass as you wanted it to be. I would not mind playing it but would not buy Xbox 360 for it. 7/10

6. Prince of Persia

The new incarnation of Prince of Persia franchise comes with completely new combat system, which reminds classic Prince of Persia ’s duels, new cell-shaded looks , cocky American-dude-alike Prince and a supporting character of so-Natalie-Portman Elika. The mixture works pretty well and I enjoyed the game more than previous ones. However, it is missing something that could make it an outstanding game. That said, I would not mind buying it and figuring out the missing factor on my own. 7/10

5. Shaun White Snowboarding

I am not a Wii fan but in my books Shaun White Snowboarding is one of the best snowboarding games ever made. It feels so good that I am starting to miss continental Europe and snowboarding during the weekends. Ubi , sell it on PS3/360 with the balance board, I am waiting! 8/10

4. Street Fighter IV

I would prefer it to be an awesomely animated 2D game but other than that, Street Fighter IV is as good as Third Strike , if not better. I have spent only 10 minutes with the game so it is hard to make a final judgement here. However, I am so excited and cannot wait to put my hands on it again! 8/10

3. Little Big Planet

The only game that makes my girlfriend want to buy a console, and the only one that lets us to have so much fun playing a videogame together. I was sceptical about it, but after several hours spent on jumping, riding stuff and slapping Monika’s Sackgirl, I think it is a wonderful title that will sell A LOT of PS3 s. Little Big Planet makes people smile, not us hardcores, people – you know: old, young, girls, boys, wannabe-50 Cents – all of them. It is going to be big. As for now 8/10, quality user-created content can make it 9/10, easily.

1. Fable II

I have not played it but spent like 30 minutes at Lionhead ’s booth watching some dude doing so. I love this game and would buy an Xbox 360 to play it. It looks beautiful, not too complicated or too simple and has this ‘omfg-I-do-want’ thing. It is hard to judge an RPG after half an hour of watching somebody else playing it, but I can give it 9/10 without much hesitation. Love at first sight!

1. Killzone 2

I am not a console FPS fan, I was not excited about this game, did not even consider trying it. Then I saw guys playing Killzone 2 . It looked good, want-to-try-it good. I managed to play it by the end of the day and...

...IT IS EPIC!

It looks absolutely stunning: impressive architecture, superb lighting, jaw dropping explosions and other environmental effects. Sounds are unbelievable with soundtrack adding a cinematic feel to the game. It feels great, almost like a non-FPS!

I do not know what Guerilla did to it but for the first time I enjoyed playing a console FPS. Enjoyed A LOT!

Games I did not like that much:

Resident Evil 5 , because it looked damn good and played like a 10 year old game. Far Cry 2 , it was boring and did not looked good enough, not compared to Gears 2 , Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 . Fallout – maybe it is a good game. Based on what I have seen, it is not for me. Resistance 2 looked quite good but nothing special. Saints Row 2 looked bad and felt that way. Banjo was not as fun as Ratchet on PS3 , sorry Rare . Fifa looked all right but I prefer Pro Evolution Soccer . Hawx had ridiculously long loading times, EndWar seemed quite boring.
